Description
Silvertone 10-inch single-sided 78 RPM record # 46634 is "Nigger Love a Watermelon, Ha! Ha! Ha!", with the anonymous label credit "Baritone Solo, Banjo and Orchestra Accompaniment." Silvertone was a Sears Roebuck label in use from about 1915, and their labeling typically did not identify the artist or band. In this case, however, the number 46634 is a Columbia matrix number that identifies the singer as Harry C. Browne on corresponding Columbia releases from the same master, with a recording date in March, 1916. The back is blank apart from a copyright notice sticker.
The record is still remarkably shiny for its age, and has very little in the way of visible scuffs or scratches. It does, however, have a hairline crack, which is holding tightly together and barely even visible on the back. I've played it on my Audio-Technica turntable, and there were no skips or jumps, and the background noise was just light and unobtrusive, especially considering the record's age. The crack - which is about an inch long and represents about the first minute of playing time - was audible as a light ticking, but light is the operative word. Because of variations in tracking ability, filtering technology and needle weights, I can offer no guarantees as to how well it will play on your equipment. Please also check the pictures for any label damage.
