Description
Up for grab here is the white whale of Blue Note records, an original mono pressing of the self titled Hank Mobley BN 1568 from 1957.
Let’s get the obvious out of the way, this copy is not an archival quality example of the record. Grading according to Goldmine standards the cover would rate a VG- to G+, the top seam is completely split and the spine has a 3” - 4” split as well. The bottom seam is intact. There is faded writing on the front and back covers and some fading and delamination as well as can be seen in the photos.
As for the actual record, both sides feature the correct 47 West 63rd label, Deep Grooves, RVG stamp, 9M and Plastylite ear engravings. Side 1 would rate a G+ or G with many light marks and a couple of feel-able scratches that cause ticks during the first couple of minutes of “Mighty Moe & Joe”. However, the song played thru those marks without any skips on my turntable (Technics 1210), and once you get past the first few minutes the side plays surprisingly well, with the music shining thru the occasional background noise. Side 2 is in better shape, an honest VG to VG- with many light marks and occasional noise but no major damage, and again once you get past the opening minute or two of the side it plays quite nicely with very enjoyable quality. The record would no doubt benefit from a cleaning with a vacuum system but I do not own one so that is up to the buyer.
