Label/Format: Impulse! with matt textured surfaces. Side one with the embossed ‘K T’ tax codes, so unworn and perfect, they are not too easy to see. This an EMI pressing with ‘THE GRAMOPHONE CO LTD’ text, as well as the ‘SOLD IN U.K. … text above the hole. This a superb original from 1967 in rarer stereo.

Label Conditions: Both in little short of immaculate condition. Very clean, fresh and attractive with only a mere couple of light, fine and faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole area. This jazz gem appears hardly played.

Brief Info: A very important album in the Coltrane catalogue as it was the last studio set to be approved by him before his untimely death. Also this includes a track where Coltrane plays the flute entirely in place of his usual saxophones, ‘To Be’ was his only piece to do so. Side two is more standard late Coltrane recorded at about the same time as ‘Interstellar Space’. This is a superb example of this UK pressed album, appearing hardly played and offering magnificent sound throughout. One for collectors and fans of this legendary jazz giant.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better. A single format with front laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on three rear flipbacks. The back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with ‘Patents Pending’ text. Includes the plain white ‘PATENT APPLIED FOR’ inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: A supreme front that comes very close to reminding of new. This has a fantastic portrait painting of the great man by Victor Kalin which looks amazing beneath shiny, clear and fresh laminate. With no lifting, hardly any creasing and any dulling little and light, this front should please even the jazz connoisseurs wanting a copy of this final authorised Coltrane album cover.

Cover Back: The back is of the same quality standard, any discolouration or spot toning is minimal and faint, this has no creasing or rubbing, and the thick record has left no rim traces or ring wear. The three flipbacks are solid, neat and clean without the usual grime lines or burring on their ends. Fine hairline creases to their laminate that few covers will ever avoid of this type. Just a hint of patchy toning on the flipbacks laminate ends.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both straight, smooth and unworn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with any thickening minuscule. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, the ends are lightly pinched in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, also beautifully centred as-seen.

Corners: Four superb corners that looks practically as-made with no knocks or rubbing worthy of mention.

Cover Summary: A beautiful all-round example of this classic 1967 John Coltrane cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. This jazz legend’s final studio album cover should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): again, arguably better with only traces of the usual seam adhesive darkening. Unusually, the paper is still rigid, not floppy and softened like most inners of considerable age, this inner has the feel and texture of almost new, reiterating the record has hardly been removed or inserted. No creasing and all edges solidly intact with no repairs, they seldom are seen better. This includes the ‘PATENT APPLIED FOR’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR MINT: a superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface traces less than minuscule, there is barely any blemishes at all, I doubt if this record has seen light-of-day for decades and probably played once prior to my mandatory play-grade. Visually a stunning jazz classic that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality Coltrane album plays up to it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will match, let alone outperform this original UK pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been superbly stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this high quality record. It will prove very difficult to find better and merits my highest recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
