Rarity: Quite rare, although this sold more copies in the United States, this is still not seen often, especially with the text inner sleeve.

Brief Info: One of two albums issued on Zapple, an off-shoot of Apple Records dedicated to experimental and avant garde music. The other was George Harrison’s second solo album ‘Electronic Sound’ – both fared pretty badly, especially in the UK. The label quickly folded after each was released. Both albums failed to chart in the UK, but surprisingly it did in the United States where sales of around 60,000 were claimed. This is an album that takes even avant garde ‘music’ to extreme – George Martin’s cover quote of ‘No Comment’ pretty much sums it up for him. Most rate it as the worst album John Lennon put his name to and being honest, my play-grade was difficult – side one especially. ‘Cambridge’ was recorded live in front of an audience, it’s a barrage of vocal extreme by Yoko with guitar feedback and distortion by John. I like and enjoy much out-there and challenging music, but this takes it to a new level. Side two gets no easier, it even includes two minutes of silence as the title suggests. Without doubt one of the most uncompromising records ever issued by a major artist, it reputedly only sold around 5,000 copies in the UK, I guess many would have been shocked at what they heard. Clearly important for label and Beatles related collectors, but I suggest it will not be played too many times – that simply being honest. This an American issue appearing little played. It includes the elusive inner sleeve and record and cover are impressive. An album not seen often, for sure, a brave and daring set, it being one of three of this type, arguably this is the most difficult of all.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated single format with the paste-on style back panel. The surfaces smooth with a gentle hint of texturing. Printed and made in the United States, includes the text inner sleeve. The back states ‘MADE IN MERRIE ENGLAND’, but this is referring to the album’s recording, not manufacturing.

Cover Front: Only gentle rim rubbing, this patchy and mild for an unforgiving surface. Generally clean, still fresh with barely any creasing or friction rubbing at all.

Cover Back: A few fine surface marks and minor corner tip rub or crease, little else.

Top Edge: All edges are unsplit with no repairs. This one straight with only light rubs near the ends.

Bottom Edge: Pretty much the same.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with hardly any wear or thickening to the thick card favoured by American manufacturers. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight and barely worn. All text is perfect as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs mostly small and light, a little more on the bottom right. Very fine and mostly excellent shape retained with no major knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this scarce and typicall more fragile American-made cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: Better than EXCELLENT for looks, but cautiously graded due to some edge splitting that I have neatly repaired, and now registering little. I do this to stop splits widening in future, and this unlined inner is fragile. A scarce inner, this has little else to fault with any hint of creasing or ageing minimal and faint. This was printed on one side only.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better, for certain, this hardly played. Side one is little short of immaculate and barey marked. Side two with gentle surface marks, that common on vintage American vinyl that always seems to mark more easily than European vinyl. But totally superficial and minor, this record plays very well. A very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very challening album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – silence on the two minutes of silence on side two near impossible of course, but this has very little even here. Overall, an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this early American pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. In terms of audio blemishes, little spoilt my play-grade. It could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended as long as commercial music is not expected – for content, this is a quite an extreme album as practically all reviewers state.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
