John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band 1U / 1U 1st Press

This first pressing is from a collection I purchased recently that has been so well preserved.  The previous owner certainly knew how to look after his records and this one is no exception.  It plays with stunning audio on both sides and there is not one single click or pop and no underlying static either.  The clarity and definition of the audio is outstanding!

Such is their quality there is no need to describe each track in detail as I generally do.  However, I will still listen to every track in full so as to provide a 'correct' grading and will state any imperfections even if minor.

The vinyl is visually in superb order and the cover is also in lovely condition with barely any wear.  The lyric inner just has some creasing.

Play grading

The funeral bells on 'Mother' play with stunning clarity and the first vocal is also very clean with next to no static.  There are a small number of barely audible ticks towards the end of the first verse.  From then on it plays incredibly well with a clarity that is so impressive for a record of this age.  One minor light static 'moment' but this is a superb version for sure.  I think Near Mint is an honest assessment of the audio.  If anything 'Hold On' is even better as there is just no intrusion on the audio and 'I Found Out' is equally as good.  The clarity and depth of the audio is outstanding and 'as new' correctly describes these two tracks - no exaggeration!  The acoustic intro on 'Working Class Hero' and the first verse also play with immeasurable clarity and this standard is maintained throughout the track.  No ticks, clicks or pops and no underlying static.  There is just a touch of distortion on the top end but really it is so minor and hardly noticeable.  'Isolation' ends the side with very similar audio - amazing clarity and only a minor touch of static distortion on Lennon's higher register.  A stunning version regardless.

'Remember' on S2 plays with great depth and has no interference aside from a couple of very light ticks that you could easily miss!  There is barely any static on this track and Near Mint is deserved.  The super quiet intro on 'Love' plays beautifully with no intrusion and it continues in the same way.  The clarity here is STUNNING for such a quiet track and I only detected a couple of minor static ticks.  What a version!  'Well Well Well' plays with perfect precision, there are no negatives and 'Look At Me' also plays beautifully with only a couple of light ticks on the fade out.  From start to finish 'God' plays with exceptional clarity and...no interference.  A wonderful version with no underlying static and 'My Mummy's Dead' ends this classic album with stunning playback.

This first pressing has been so well preserved and plays with incredible sonic quality all the way through.  There are no clicks or pops and barely any static.  What an album!

Visual grading

The vinyl is in lovely condition with a very impressive glossy sheen and has no scratches.  S1 is stunning with only 3/4 very faint hairlines and S2 is almost as good with only one faint hairline scuff that has no affect on the superb audio. The grooves are so clean on both sides and the run out grooves and labels are also in great condition.  S1 has very little spindle wear but there is more on S2.

The Cover & Lyric Inner

The laminated cover is in excellent condition with hardly any wear.  The edges have no rubbing and the corners are in superb shape also.  The thin spine is in perfect condition and the opening edge has only a little handling wear.  The front cover is super clean with just one small crease/laminate lift in the lower left corner and a couple of other very small laminate creases.  The back cover is even better with only one very faint barely visible crease top left.  The lyric inner is in excellent order with no side splits, tears or marking just some creasing here and there.

Play tested on my Pro-Ject Essential III Turntable / B&W 684 Speakers

This record has been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine

I grade according to "Record Collector" guidelines.
