Used 1978 Japanese Import Stereo Reissue of Classic 1977 ABC-Impulse Release of Bandleader/Master Composer/Tenor Saxophonist John Coltrane Entitled First Meditation(for Quartet), Produced for Release by Michael Cuscuna, Original Sessions Produced by Bob Thiele and John Coltrane, Recording Engineer Is Rudy Van Gelder, Original Recording Session at Van Gelder Studios on Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey September 2 of 1963, All Compositions Written by John Coltrane - "Not released initially until 1977, the music on this 1992 CD was the last recording made by the classic John Coltrane Quartet; other slightly later records found the group augmented by additional musicians. Four of the five movements on this release (which are augmented by a lengthier second version of "Joy") would become part of the better-known Meditations album (along with another movement) 2½-months later when tenor saxophonist Pharoah Sanders and drummer Rashied Ali temporarily made the group a sextet.
