Description
The Music Of John Eaton Volume I: The Lion And Androcles (1973 opera for synthesizers, 2 pianos tuned a quarter-tone apart, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, drumkit, children's voices, 2 sopranos, mezzo-soprano, tenor, baritone, bass). private pressing by Recherche 1005
Mega-rare limited edition lp (hand-numbered 34 out of 100), the only existing recording of Eaton's odd "Opera in One Act for Children of All Ages" about mushrooms, talking lions, and a magical instrument called the moonbeam bender. Like much of Eaton's work, this unique experimental piece makes extensive (and beautiful) use of microtonal scales along with occassional atmospheric electronics. It's hard to imagine the resulting cacophony sustaining the interest of children without frightening them first; Eaton pulls no punches for the sake of the kiddies as this is a fully realized avant garde composition exploring complex mictoronal relationships among the voices and instruments. This album a great treasure and is the only copy I've ever seen; I'm guessing it may be the only one you'll ever see! The packaging is sparse and provides little information besides the performers: Carmon DeLeone conducting the Indiana University Chamber Soloists, with vocalists Hanna Herford, William Oberholtzer, William Reeder, Linda Anderson, Michael Roccio, Linda Anderson, and Alice Garrott. The libretto is by Eugene Walter and David Anderson, after Aulus Gellius.
Eaton studied under Milton Babbitt, Edward Cone, and Roger Sessions, worked with Gunther Schuller and Zubin Mehta, and was among the first composers to work with early synthesizers, especially the Syn-ket and the Moog; he is known for his his experiments in microtonal pitch relationships and contemporary opera, and is credited with giving in 1965 the first ever public performance using a synthesizer. This record needs to be heard by anyone interested in the tradition of microtonal composers like Harry Partch, Ivan Wyschnegradsky, Lou Harrison, La Monte Young, Ben Johnston, Easley Blackwood, Glenn Branca, Alvin Lucier, Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley, Charles Ives, Alois Haba, Julian Carrillo, James Tenney, Rhys Chatham, Tony Conrad, etc.
