Description
An original Xmas '71 Zep II on UK Red & Plum Atlantic. Matrix A6/B4. Well everyone wants a nice red & plum copy - and you can understand why. Nothing else seems to quite deliver the sheer weight in the audio that Zep were capable of. The vinyl comes housed in an original Xmas-71/Spring-72 E J Day cover. Did this cover definitely originate with this particular LP at Xmas-1971? On balance... probably not [quite!]. My hunch is it is from a couple of months later [Spring '72]. Covers were gradually getting darker throughout the Zep II print run. By Xmas 1971 they're not far off black! E J Day printed the covers throughout this period. Around Xmas-71 Kinney took over the Atlantic catalogue and the re-numbered the entire sequence for Q1 1972. And this cover does mention the new catalogue number so I expect it's more likely from Q1-1972 [a couple of months later]. We also have an original 'plastic bag warning' inner sleeve dated to 1971.
Vinyl (Ex-/Vg+) In lovely condition and has only seen relatively light use. Under close inspection there are a few light marks, and perhaps, a couple of other small semi-fellable marks. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a varying level of playback between VERYGOOD+ and NEAR EXCELLENT with one deviation apparent. When on form this copy really is very impressive and more than capable of conveying the sheer weight in the guitars that later copies just cannot manage to do. It is, however, not a perfectly quiet player in all areas. Expect a bit of low-level static occasionally in the quieter moments of Killing Floor and Thank You...and in the opening to Ramble & BIABH. But a lot of this record is flat out hard rock - and it will sound fab. The only deviation is caused by a small mark at the start of Killing Floor. Expect three or four clicks. Overall a stellar performer of this Zep classic. Enjoy!
Cover (Ex-) In lovely condition and these Zep II covers are a real pain to find looking this good. Nice dark colours without the usual surface wear that is so common on this title. The ageing that is so often apparent on this title seems to have very much taken a back seat thankfully. The interior looks great - no issues at all. There's a bit of edge wear, but nothing epic. The openings are still sharp and the spine is almost fully intact [unusual for Zep II]. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidty.
Inner(Vg) light ageing. Some rips at the diecut opening.
