Baron Elmo Enterprises proudly presents a killer slice of vinyl from one of the greatest secrets of early Eighties post-punk, courtesy of Swiss ensemble LILIPUT: Some Songs, their impossibly rare second and final lp, a UK import released in 1983 by Rough Trade. Nearly everyone missed this group at the timeâ€¦ a sad fate for what may well be the best all-girl rock band in the history of the music. Formerly known as Kleenex (until the corporate baddies at Kimberly-Clark forced a name change), these rowdy dames unleashed a series of utterly fantastic singles that blew the minds of the lucky few who got to hear them. They were relatively unschooled on their instruments, but their instincts were so dead on target that this very amateurishness turns out to be one of Liliput's greatest virtues, leading them down wondrous musical byways that more polished players would never think to explore. Their early sound was a rough' n tumble art-punk that relied on herky-jerky time signatures, unexpected angles and joins, oddball melodies and singing that involves lots of the kind of vocal sounds that kids love to make. The lyrics are an intoxicating polyglot of English, German and dadaesque word bits of their own creation. What truly blasts the music of Kleenex/Liliput into the realm of excellence, though, is the sheer joy and love of play that runs through every note. Imagine a blend of The Stooges, The Shaggs, X-Ray Spex and a 3rd grade recess and you'll be within shouting distance. These exuberant lasses had Riot Grrrl utterly bested more than a decade ahead of the factâ€¦ only no one was listening at the time. Despite effusive praise from big-time rock critics Robert Christgau and Greil Marcus (both of whom plugged Liliput at every opportunity), their first album sold a paltry 600 copies in the States. Some Songs shifted even fewer units, and Liliput jacked it in for good shortly thereafter. At this point in their career, the band had radically scaled down the punk rock influence in their sound, going instead for a bizarre, quirky art-folk that, happily, never loses sight of the playfulness that makes them so great, even on the more serious songs. Fans of such killer women-led bands as the Raincoats, Slits, Ut and Essential Logic may well see God, or some semblance of her, when exposed to this magnificent music. The album includes an awesome cover painting (done by Liliput bassist Klaudia Schiff) and the complete lyrics, neither of which come with the group's compilation CD. The record and cover both show slight wear, but this lp looks great and plays beautifully. A shipping charge of $4.00 will be added to the winning total, more for outside the USA.
