This outstanding LP – with 1S/2S stampers – from RCA Victrola (VICS-1184, US pressing, plum/silver label, stereo) features conductor Jean Martinon and the London Symphony Orchestra's justly famous and brilliant accounts of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1 in F minor Op. 10 and The Age of Gold Ballet Suite Op. 22a, both recorded during 9-11 December 1957 in the fabled acoustics of London's Kingsway Hall (producer: James Walker / engineer: Alan Reeve).
Although in the Symphony Efrem Kurtz, Eugene Ormandy, and Igor Markevitch have their admirers, Martinon's lithe, high-octane approach – with the LSO on biting form – is wholly compelling in its own way, a "Gallic" Shostakovich, but no less interesting for that.
The fine liner notes are by Paul Hume, then Music Editor of The Washington Post and are provided in English only. The evocative cover art reproduces Mario Sironi’s “Study of a Man Taming a Rearing Horse”.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor corner wear and aging, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects and the jacket remains perfectly solid, bright, and highly attractive in appearance – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
