3 LPs of glorious music and stunning analog stereo sound.
If you're looking, you already know all about the music, this cellist, the legenadry sonic splendors of Mercury Living Presence Stereo at its best (as it is right here) ... and the relative rarity of this set when the vinyl is at least M- ... more like M ... on all six sides!
In sequence, stampers are RFR-3/RFR-1, RFRF-2/RFR-2, RFR-2/RFR-2.
To repeat, all six sides rate at least M-, most are probably a true full MINT. There aren't even any spindle trails anywhere that I can see.
I believe the two sides I played once (under a low-hour Shelter 901 tracking at less than 2 grams) may be the only playing any of the three discs ever received.
Vinyl keep in rice paper, inside another paper sleeve. Three fairly crisp, untaped, untorn (but with slightly faded top edges) Mercury Stereo paper sleeves are stored empty at the bottom of the box. You can see glimpses of them in the pictures. They are correct for the period, but I can't account for their slightly faded edges, given the flawless, pristine condition of the vinyl. Maybe the first owner discarded the original sleeves in favor of plastic and paper sleeves and these were added later to make things more "official" again. No big deal, I'm sure.
The box is not perfect. It is square on all edges, no dings or dents. Everything is crisp, with no signs of stains marks or the usual handling and dropping tauma. But the original tape hinge is separated cleanly its whole length ... almost as if the first owner razored it apart so he could lift the entire box lid off when opening the set! Some people!
I haven't attempted to repair the separated hinge. Someone with more experience at that may try. Also, under the red dot seen in the cover photo is a "wound" from a sticker (maybe the red dot?) lifting a patch of the cover surface away. Again, I have made no attempt to remedy this.
The booklet is in fine shape. Also included, for grins, is an original record review from an issue of Hi-Fi Magazine of the period. (They liked it.)
I will try to answer your questions. I am not a record merchant or an expert in rating the condition of used vinyl. But I do recognize flawless vinyl when I look at it carefully, closely and over and over again. I keep challenging my impressions of the superb condition of all six sides ... but I am starting to get gun-shy about pulling the LPs out for yet another once-over. I'm not afraid I'll find a flaw ... but rather that I may cause one!
I'd prefer that the next person who inspects these be their new owner.
Final note: the pictures have lightened the true maroon color of the labels considerably. Have no doubt, these are all the correct classic dark M.L.P. maroon!
