Great and scarce album of experimental microtonal and early synthesizer pieces. Most of these works feature the Syn-Ket, a microtonal electronic instrument invented in 1964 by Paulo Ketoff for RCA Italia consisting of 3 keyboards and an array of dials, levers, and switches (the notes call it "the first instrument developed for the live performance of electronic music"). The purely electronic Piece for Solo Syn-Ket No.3 was originally conceived for 48 loudspeakers; a 2-channel realization is presented here. Microtonal Fantasy is for one player seated at two quarter-tone pianos, one for each hand. Songs for RPB has a soprano singing into and over the strings of a microtonally prepared piano to achieve alien resonances. Prelude to "Myshkin" is from an opera based on Dostoyevsky's The Idiot. The players are Eaton himself on Syn-Ket and piano, Miciko Hirayama, soprano, and Richard Trythall, piano.

artist info from album notes etc.:
Eaton studied under Milton Babbitt, Edward Cone, and Roger Sessions, worked with Gunther Schuller and Zubin Mehta, and was among the first composers to work with early synthesizers, especially the Syn-ket and the Moog; he is known for his experiments in microtonal pitch relationships and contemporary opera, and is credited with giving in 1965 the first ever public performance using a synthesizer. This record needs to be heard by anyone interested in early electronic instruments like Oskar Sala and his trautonium, Robert Moog, Donald Buchla/Morton Subotnick, Clara Rockmore and the Theremin, Messiaen and the ondes Martenot, the Ondioline, Raymond Scott, Bruce Haack, and Hugh Le Caine, as well as the tradition of microtonal composers like Harry Partch, Ivan Wyschnegradsky, Lou Harrison, La Monte Young, Ben Johnston, Easley Blackwood, Glenn Branca, Alvin Lucier, Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley, Charles Ives, Alois Haba, Julian Carrillo, Emil Richards, Joe Maneri, Teo Macero, James Tenney, Rhys Chatham, and Tony Conrad.
