This handsome LP from Eurodisc (200 054-250, German pressing, gold label, stereo) features David Oistrakh's thrilling account of Sibelius' Violin Concerto in D minor Op. 47, made on 23 July 1965 with conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky and the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra. Comparisons with his earlier account with Ormandy and the fabulous Philadelphians are not to Oistrakh's disadvantage and Rozhdestvensky and the Moscow RSO yield little to the American counterparts. Melodiya is seldom praised for the quality of their recordings, but in my opinon, this Russian-remake boasts superior sound.

Filling out the disc is Oistrakh's equally captivating readings of Sibelius' Humoreskes for Violin and Orchestra Op. 87, in which he is again accompanied by Rozhdestvensky and the Moscow RSO – sessions held in Moscow on 27 September 1968.

This is exalted playing by any measure and all those who treasure the art of the violin will find much to admire here. Indeed, those unfamiliar with Eurodisc pressings would do well to seek them out – they offer the greatest Russian artists on superb German-pressed vinyl.

There are extensive liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, provided in German only. The memorable cover photo of Oistrakh is credited to Felicitas/Hennch, Zurich.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is light edgewear, more so at corners, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP is near-MINT and playback is superb – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.
