Tug of War is the third solo studio album by Paul McCartney, released in April 1982. It was McCartney's first album released after the dissolution of Wings in April, 1981 and McCartney's first album after the murder of former songwriting partner John Lennon. The album was produced by former Beatles producer George Martin and was a number 1 hit in numerous countries. It was hailed as a return-to-form for McCartney upon release.
Following the release of the solo album McCartney II, Wings regrouped in July and October 1980 to rehearse several songs which later appeared on Tug of War and Pipes of Peace. Feeling the need for direction, McCartney called upon his old producer, George Martin, to begin recording a song written for the animated Rupert Bear character (to which McCartney owned the rights), entitled "We All Stand Together", among others. The productive sessions continued until 9 December, the morning McCartney woke up to discover that John Lennon had been shot and killed the night before in New York City. Abandoning that day's session part-way through (where he and Denny Laine were recording future B-Side "Rainclouds"), both Martin and McCartney felt it was best to leave the project for the time being and start anew once they were ready.

In February 1981, two months after Lennon's death, Paul McCartney resumed his sessions, recording that month with Stevie Wonder, Stanley Clarke, Carl Perkins and Ringo Starr and laying down several songs in the process. The recordings were held at AIR Studios in Montserrat, in the Caribbean and lasted from 3 February to 2 March, ending with Ebony and Ivory and What's That You're Doing, two songs featuring Stevie Wonder. 10cc guitarist Eric Stewart also became a frequent collaborator of McCartney's during this era. Further sessions that summer were also undertaken at George Martin's AIR studios at Oxford Street, London – with the producer manning the controls and giving McCartney's music the benefit of 1980s technology. The sessions were so productive that several of its tracks would be held over for the next album, Pipes of Peace, which followed in 1983. The rest of 1981 would be spent in a quiet fashion, with McCartney and Martin touching up the album and perfecting it.
In a contemporary review for Rolling Stone, music critic Stephen Holden hailed Tug of War as "the masterpiece everyone has always known Paul McCartney could make", and particularly admired its vivid music and consistent songwriting.
In March 1982, McCartney's duet with Stevie Wonder, "Ebony and Ivory", was released to considerable commercial success, reaching number one in many countries. Tug of War followed in April, and similarly became a worldwide number one. The follow-up single, "Take It Away", reached the top ten in the United States. The album went on to sell several million copies and did much to restore McCartney's critical reputation after what was viewed as a lean period for him. Tug of War was nominated for the "Album of the Year" Grammy in 1983.

CLASSIC ORIGINAL UK album by PAUL MCCARTNEY

ALBUM PLAYED FOR AUDIO GRADING:

Yes – Fantastic sound quality throughout! This great record plays up to the visual and audio grading and beyond, with stunningly clear sound from this original press vinyl.

TUG OF WAR is a varied collection of music, and is also a relatively sensitive piece of vinyl, and hard to find in clear audio condition. Worn copies can have a lot of surface sound even on musically complex and busy tracks like 'Whats That You're Doing.' This pressing has strong undistorted audio, with super clear sound.

Superb audio, every track has been tested and the sound quality is just sensational. Wonderful TOP audio, there is NO distortion, NO sticks or jumps what so ever, and virtual silence between the tracks. There is certainly no interference, and NO loud pops, clicks or distortion anywhere. It really sounds great and plays with great sound separation and clarity!

This vinyl is a super clear pressing of TUG OF WAR. Great music with great clarity, and definition. The music jumps out, with definition and clarity. I'll give a detailed account below:

Beginning with 'Tug of War', the music comes in with super clear audio, no pops or clicks and incredibly clean run ins. The sound is just sensational, deep and bassy and crystal clear. Near silence between the tracks, moving into the wonderful 'Take it Away', which demonstrates subtle production layering, even in a seemingly simple track like this, with notes and effects that are usually lost on most even relatively played vinyls. Here the audio sings out with amazing clarity.  Great audio for such a paired down track. There are no light tics at the quiet start of the track, and I couldn't detect any throughout the track either. 'Somebody Who Cares', a real test on this album due to its many layered sections sings out with very little static in the run ins and quiet areas. Great music with great clarity, and so hard to find with this type of sound. Still no loud pops or clicks during the music, and not a hint of distortion. In fact I may as well confirm now that there is not a hint of distortion anywhere on this great vinyl, nothing like it.

The massive 'Whats That You're Doing' plays with brilliant clear sound, and the instrumental section layered again, sounds great. Superb clear bright sound, amazing, I could barely detect any background static at all, just a single dust pop in the middle, this track maintains the very high standard of this entire vinyl. Rounding off side 1. with 'Here Today', this incredible track just sounds amazing. Great clear sound with that deep echoey audio that the early pressings really allow you to hear, no pops or clicks, no interference. Amazing.

Side 2. comes in with the great 'Ballroom Dancing', following good clear run ins, the audio is just superb, with barely any detectable static, no loud pops or clicks and crystal clear vocal layering. I detected no light static tics in the middle section. Superb audio. 'The Pound is Sinking', another varied track also sings out, with great clarity and an amazing lack of surface sound. Another track often blighted with loud pops, clicks, buzzing crackle and distortion, but not here. The intro plays superbly. There is some very light static for the first few seconds but its barely audible in fact. When the vocals come in the quiet areas are incredibly clear. A superb crystal clear playing track.

'WanderLust' and 'Get It' sound just amazing, they sound so clear. Barely any light static and certainly nothing obtrusive or even that detectable. All the way through every track plays with incredible definition. Every note and every bar of the music is outstanding. The complex arrangements in 'Be What You See' play so well, with great audio precision. There is a single light tic at the start and then another single tic as the verse begins, but these are light. The track plays with no pops or clicks, great clear sound, barely any occasional light static, and then when the intro starts its even clearer, and the music is still so quiet. 'Dress Me Up as A Robber' and 'Ebony and Ivory' round of this great pressing with the same great standard that can be found on the entire record.

This is a stunning audio performance from an outstanding rare vinyl. A total lack of loud pops, clicks, interference, and certainly no distortion anywhere on this great pressing, makes this a great collectable press of this great record. Every sound and note is absolutely clear. The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, the vocals which come through with tremendous power. The tonal quality and clean quality make this a sensational pressing. Often the mastering on these early pressings had a dull sound but not with this one. The clear and extra loud First cut engineering giving this audio a great vibrant sound.

A great all round example of this classic vinyl. Top audio with staggering first matrix mix, unlike the re-issues which lack the impact. A great all round example of this great vinyl. This is a great Audio pleasure and I would give the Audio a NEAR MINT grading.

THE RECORD - VISUAL GRADING

This is a superb piece of glossy vinyl, and a really thick pressing. It looks and sounds unplayed. Deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original pressings, this vinyl has only been played a couple of times. The record has great shine, almost unmarked in strong daylight. Inspected under a spot light it still looks great, with some very light paper removal marks only.

This is a really stunning example.

Unbelievable to think this record is over 30 years old and unbelievable to think that there are pressings of TUG OF WAR  that still looks this clean!

Grades at MINT.

VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:

Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.

LABELS

Splendid deeply coloured attractive examples. No spindle traces or marls at all. This still fits very tightly around the record spindle. A stunning unplayed record.

Graded at MINT.

COVER

Comes with original UK un laminated sleeve in great condition. This rare cover has little rubbing to the corners, and none to the spine, which is largely square and true, with all the text complete in tact. Unbelievable and impossibly rare like this.

The rear cover has no light discolouration and no fading near the spine (clearly shown in the images) It also has NO ring wear, stains, writing, tears or sticker marks, and there is barely an impression of the record, and some very light creasing on the front. A great original example and rare in this condition.

Grades at EXCELLENT PLUS.

THE INNER

An extreme rarity, this press comes with Original COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL INNER, in great CONDITION. These inners are so hard to find in anything like decent condition.

Not poly lined these inners were often ripped or discarded. Not this one! No tears, splits or stains. There is the slight impression of the record and a single crease as shown.

The vinyl will of course come in a replacement plain white inner to protect the original.

Graded at EXCELLENT PLUS to NEAR MINT.

RARITY

It is getting harder and harder to find good examples of early UK pressings of TUG OF WAR, and very hard if not impossible to find examples that are complete and intact with all the original parts. The cover is almost impossible to find without serious wear, even modestly worn examples are scarce!

Original pressings in great condition are impossibly rare and this is a stunning all round complete example.  A great all round piece with TOP AUDIO throughout! A great original and ultra rare inner sleeve, and a great original poster. Superb!!

SCRUPULOUS EXAMINATION and TESTING:

All our records are play tested on highly sensitive equipment to ensure the sound quality and accuracy of description. We aim to give a precise and concise description of the sound, pointing out the slightest defect so that you know exactly what you are buying. We aim to describe all records as accurately as possible, and offer a full refund on return if for any reason you are not completely happy with the item description.

VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:

Highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and what we always aim for. We only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance; super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference. Even with the cleanest pressing you will find occasional static or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Any static build up will reduce when played, and we advise a light clean between plays for optimal performance.
