Description
Rare Texas black gospel. Arizona Juanita Drane(s), aka Arizona Dranes from Sherman, Texas. This is her first recording for Okeh Records in June 1926 "It's all right now". Super rare copy - seldom turns up. Last one was sold last year and it appears to have been the only one - until now. Arizona was of African American/ Mexican American descent. Blind from her youth she attended the Institute of deaf, dumb and blind colored youth in Austin Texas. She learned her style of playing in the Deep Elum district of Dallas - known for its music. She was first to introduce barrelhouse / ragtime style to gospel music. One interesting thing is that this is on the Okeh acoustic label - the other one sold was Okeh True Tone, but same catalog number. The True Tone process was considered poor and some recordings were scrapped in favor of a regular acoustic recording. It’s possible this one was released both ways - I don’t know.
WATCH THE VIDEO. This copy has its wear but plays loudly and clearly with substantial noise but doesn’t overpower the music & voice. I have loaded a video of this playing on a Newcomb portable. My tablet doesn’t record it as loud as it really sounds. Also my player is running a bit slow on 78. Has even wear both sides. I grade it VG minus - according to VJM. I feel it is a little better than G+. No skips detected. A side is a vocal while B side is instrumental. See photos for labels. Comes in a period Okeh sleeve. I WILL CONSIDER OFFERS. I am very honest about condition and I provide as many pictures as possible. Has no warp, bad chips or cracks - does have a few small minor lamination cracks at outer edge on one side. No returns. All questions answered quickly. Ships professionally packed - sandwiched between cardboard, wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in a new 12x12x6” box with peanuts.
