In the '70s, Roxy Music wasn't bootlegged as extensively as Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Bob Dylan,Paul McCartney, or Elton John -- let alone the Rolling Stones. Nonetheless, bootleggers put out their share of noteworthy Roxy Music LPs during the '70s; one of the bootlegs that surfaced in 1975 wasBetter Than Food. Boasting a deluxe black-and-white LP cover--as opposed to a plain white album jacket with the art work and credits on a piece of paper -- which was the format of choice for many bootleggers back then. Better Than Food comes from three sources: the first is a live BBC broadcast from 1972 with Brian Eno still on board. Roxy is in fine form on "Virginia Plain," "Re-make/Re-model," "Sea Breeze," "Grey Lagoons," and the eerie "Chance Meeting." After the BBC material comes a studio outtake of "Pyjamarama," and the album concludes with inspired post-Eno performances of "Do the Strand," "Song for Europe," and "Editions of You" from a 1974 British broadcast. The sound quality is generally excellent on this LP, which quickly earned a reputation for being one of the more high-qualityRoxy bootlegs of the '70s.
