Liner notes to this album begin: "Were a Hall of Fame for American guitarists suddenly established tomorrow, New York's Roy Smeck would surely merit induction on an early ballot, both for his magnificent artistry and for his historical importance within the field of guitar-playing itself.." "no record can do justice to Roy Smeck the performer, who spent as much time mastering tricky novelties as tricky guitar riffs, and became a vaudeville show-stopper in an age when mere histrionics, hairstyles, and high-priced hype were not sufficient to create the illusion of stage presence, let alone charisma. All the gimmicks he plied presupposed a mastery of whatever instruments he happened to be playing."
