FALSE TRUE LOVERS - The second album from the endearing MISS SHIRLEY COLLINS. From the American Folkways Label
The record is graded between Excellent (EX )and Good(G) condition, Its age is 55 years. It has some minor clicks beginning and middle of face one hence (G) but has no scratches of marks upon the album faces Apart from the aforementioned clicks, the rest of the album plays perfectly . The cover is graded Good (G) It has the thicker graded American card format with a wrap round printed label cover. There is minimal ageing around the edges but some fading along the spine and minor discoloration on the front face. The rear face has some minor indentations. The accompanying 6 page lyric insert sheet is perfect. Unfortunately in this period, the majority of the American covers were not laminated. The inner sleeve is very good and original with curved corners.
Owned from new , this record was purchased from HMV Records, Oxford Street, London some time in 1966.
The songs were recorded in 1958 by the then 23 year old Shirley, by her (then) partner Alan Lomax an American folk song collector, as was Shirley's first album "Sweet England". The original album was released in 1959/1960 This re-issue was released in the mid 60's and differs from the original by having all the cover text in black together with the addition of the Library of congress Catalogue No -R-60-332, plus the 1960 Copyright Date. The record label is blue with silver text and dated 1959 with "True False Lovers" rather than "False True Lovers" The accompanying lyrics sheet does not have a picture of Shirley in its face, but is also dated 1959.
The songs have minimal arrangements, with Shirley accompanying herself on Banjo, with additional instrumentation by :- John Hasted (Banjo & Shirley's Banjo Tutor) Ralf Rinzler (Mandolin) and Guy Carawan (Guitar, Dulcimer) The accompanying notes were written by Alan Lomax. This album, together with tracks for "Sweet England" were recorded in a marathon two day recording session in London and engineered by the veteran sound recordist Peter Kennedy.
The 23 songs on this record feature the distinctive Sussex based English voice singing A cappella renditions of English and Irish traditional songs, together with a scattering of Appalachian gems that Shirley and Alan discovered on their legendary research jaunts into American folk tradition. They give insight into Shirley's intense interest and exploration of the British and American Folk Genre.
Both this album and Sweet England, were the commencement to Shirley's dramatic recording career through various tribulations including the loss of her voice, to her triumphal return, climaxing with her latest 8th solo studio offering, at the amazing age 85 entitled "Heart's Ease".
Some observations on Grading :- Mint (M) The Record is in brand new condition, no surface marks, no sound quality deteration. Records designated sealed or un-played qualify as mint. Excellent (EX) The Record shows some signs of being played, but with minimal lessening of sound quality. The Cover &/or packaging may show slight wear &/or creasing. Very Good (VG) The Record has obviously been played many times, but manifests no sound quality deterioraton. Despite noticeable surface marks &/or light scratching. Visible wear & tear on the Cover or additional items, without major defects, is acceptable. Good (G) The Record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, pehaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The Cover and contents may suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc. Fair (F) The Record is still just playable, but has not been cared for propery and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The Cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.
