Description

SPIKE HUGHES was an up-and-coming British bandleader, composer / arranger and all-round proselytizer for Hot American Jazz. He led a very successful band in Britain, and had a lively correspondence with his American peers. In May, 1933, he embarked upon the adventure of his life:  To sail to New York, armed with his latest compositions, hire the finest Negro musicians, and record them to his satisfaction. Talk about fulfilling a bucket-list item!


AND dig who he got:  Henry Allen, Leonard Davis, Bill Dillard (trumpets) / Dicky Wells, Wilbur de Paris, George Washington (trombones) / Benny Carter, Howard Johnson, Wayman Carver, Coleman Hawkins,  Chu Berry (assorted reeds & woodwinds) / Luis Russell (piano) / Lawrence Lucie (guitar) / Ernest Hill (bass) / Sid Catlett (drums)!! Any NAMES?? 


Truly, a bandleader's wet dream.  These records, then, by SPIKE HUGHES AND HIS NEGRO ORCHESTRA, are impeccably rendered, with heartfelt and accomplished soloing throughout.  COLEMAN HAWKINS, especially, distinguishes himself on side after side.  "AIR IN D-FLAT" and "SWEET SORROW BLUES" are but two sides out of a dozen that will dazzle you.  Now you can collect the other ten!  


This original 1933 English Decca F.5101 is in lovely EE+ condition.
