Description

For your consideration, a very rare treat for the vintage record and radio show collector, as well as for Lone Ranger fans. This is an original 16-inch transcription disc of an episode of The Lone Ranger radio show on an acetate disc with a label from WXYZ radio in Detroit, which was the station that created and produced the original Lone Ranger radio show. What's more, the disc is labeled "audition." I don't know exactly who was auditioning, or if it was a test format, or what. One strange thing is that it's a complete program; usually these were in two parts, with part one on one side and part two on another. That makes this show about half the length of a standard program. Another weird thing about the show is that the Ranger calls Tanto Kimosabe, instead of the other way around. I'm not sure which episode it is, exactly, but judging by the date and some info I found online, as well as the plot, it might be "Star for the Ranger," which aired about the same time as the date on the label (April 20, 1945). This doesn't match the record number (979), but that could have been an internal station catalog number, and not necessarily the program number. I'm really not sure and although there is a lot of info online about the show itself, I had a hard time finding episode-by-episode information. Really, I'm more of an X-Minus One fan.

I don't grade records. This record looks good for 70 year-old acetate. The dots you see in one of the pictures is just dust. I played the record all the way through it it sounds very good. Plays inside out, 33-rpm. The other side of the record is blank and looks good except for some acetate disease that would clean off if you wanted to. The sleeve may or may not be original and as usual is worn through on the bottom and sides. Please keep in mind that you'd need a large record player in order to actually play this; most only accommodate 12" records. I have some other Lone Ranger/other program transcriptions that I'll be selling soon, but this is the only one labeled "audition," and one of the few I have with an actual WXYZ label.

Items sold as-is so please feel free to ask any and all questions. The shipping price is the actual cost and includes tracking number. Payment or communication is due within 24-hours of auction end. If you need more time to pay that is fine but you must contact me and let me know. Please don't leave me wondering if you're going to pay or ditch. Good luck and happy bidding.

UPDATE: A fellow ebayer and old-time radio fan listened to this record and told me that the actor playing the role of The Lone Ranger is Paul Sutton, who was the lead character in SGT. PRESTON OF THE YUKON, (a.k.a. CHALLENGE OF THE YUKON). Sutton never played The Lone Ranger on radio. Why they made this disc I couldn't guess, unless it was to audition for the Sgt. Preston role, perhaps. Whatever the reason, I think it's safe to say that this is a one-of a kind record.
