THE BEATLES - DOUBLE WHITE ALBUM

A rare and sought after copy of this 1968 UK MONO 1st pressing on the UK APPLE label, MONO, PMC 7067/8

The dead wax matrix numbers are :

Side 1  XEX 709 - 1 with stampers "3" and "GRW" at 6.30 o'clock and 12.30 o'clock respectively

Side 2  XEX 710 - 1 with stampers "3" and "G D G" at 5 o'clock and 10 o'clock respectively

Side 3  XEX 711 - 1 with stampers "3" and "LP" at 9 o'clock and 2.30 o'clock respectively

Side 4  XEX 712 - 1 with stampers "4" and "TG" at 8.30 o'clock and 2 o'clock respectively

The appearance of each of the vinyls is VG+. Each vinyl is flat and each side of each vinyl has retained much of it's original beautiful glossy sheen. In normal daylight it is just the small, sporadic light scuff that is visible on each vinyl apart from an 8cm pencil line scuff on side 4. Under a bright halogen light there are a few more scuffs that come into evidence - certainly at the beginning of track 1, side 1 - and the occasional and sporadic wispy hairline. There is no blemish at all, whether it be scuff or wispy hairline, that is "feelable" and there appears to be no obvious scratches or even hairlines that are obviously beneath the surface. That doesn't mean to say that there is nothing that goes below the surface - there must be because there is some occasional light clicking (see audio description below) - it's just that it's not obvious and I can't feel it!

The labels are excellent+. In normal daylight each label comes across as near perfect. It's only under a bright light and with close inspection that a few very light spindle trails can be identified adjacent to the centre hole on each label. Note the absence of any reference to "E.M.I." on the label text, which is indicative of very first pressings of this wonderful album - later pressings contained the text "An E.M.I. Recording". 

The laminated Garrod & Lofthouse laminated outer sleeve is in very good+ condition.  All edges remain firm with barely any scuffing, and that includes the rigid spine where all writing remains perfectly legible. There is a vertical brown scuff on the reverse side adjacent to the spine (see photo) and on the front side a few light score marks towards the bottom edge. There is also a little rubbing on each corner along with some very minor compression on the top and bottom right front side corners but all of  this is minor. Held in the right light, and at the right angle, it is possible to detect some very light ring wear but again this is minor and certainly non-intrusive. The inside of the gatefold is very impressive with all text perfectly intact and the Beatles photos in as nice a condition as when this record was first bought. It's difficult to fault the condition of the inside of the gatefold. Overall I would say that the appearance and condition of this still beautifully glossy gatefold, with the extremely low number of "0004428" clear to see on the front side, borders on excellent but because of the vertical brown scuff mark on the reverse side will settle for very good+.

The four photos are in excellent+ condition - no marks, no scuffing or unwanted writing, no blue tac or glue residue and no pin prick holes - lovely!

The folded and obviously well looked after lyric/photo poster is in excellent condition with no tears or splits, no unwanted writing, and just some occasional, light discolouration but nothing of any real significance.  

Finally, the quality of the audio is overall very good. There is some occasional, light background crackle which is most obvious at the beginning of each side and during the quiter moments/interludes. I noticed just a little background (very background) clicking on "Back In The USSR", x4 light clicks on "Dear Prudence" along with a little more obvious light crackle during most of this track, 1 click on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", x12 light clicks on "Happiness Is A Warm Gun"; on side 2 there is light background crackle during the first minute of the first track, and x8 clicks on "Julia"; on side 3 there is light clicking during the first half of "Mother Nature's Son" and on side 4 some further light clicking during the first minute of the final track "Good Night".  There is further occasional, and light background crackle on the remainder of each side but I stress that it is mostly light and largely non-intrusive. I suspect that the audio quality could be further improved by a professional clean and that much of the background light crackle (mostly non-intrusive anyway) is caused by dust in the grooves through decades of storage. Does each side still make for a great listen? Yes, of course, and with impressive tone and clarity even on the higher frequencies and at higher volume with the background crackle mostly being in evidence just during the quieter moments and at the beginning and end of each side anyway.

Comes complete with original one-sided die-cut black inners which, amazingly, have no tears or splits and remain fully functional, but do have a little fraying along the opening edges and along the circumference of the die-cuts. Excellent-.  Note that I always post the record(s) in a new plain white inner sleeve(s) in order to protect the original(s).

In summary a solid VERY GOOD+ copy of this rare and highly sought after 1968 UK 1st MONO pressing Beatles classic, with the extremely low front numbering becoming a real rarity - a "must" for any serious Beatles vinyl collection and only continuing to gain in value.

Mint

The records itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items, such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent

The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and /or creasing.

Very Good

The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good

The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

Fair

The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents are torn, stained and/or defaced

Poor

The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents are badly damaged or partly missing.

Bad

The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler

Upon reflection, and having played the entire album (both records) through one more time I would like to add a comment to the overall audio quality : record 1 (both sides) is as per the original advert - excellent+ in other words, with superb sound quality throughout. For record 2 there is a little occasional, mild and sporadic background interference/crackle, most noticeable at the beginning and end of sides 3 and 4. On very close inspection I have detected some very light scuffing at the beginning of side 3 which might explain this mild interference, but for the end of side 3 and the beginning and end of side 4, and some of the interludes, I cannot find an obvious cause so can only assume that this is down to dust in the grooves through decades of storage and feel confident that a professional clean would go a long way to curing. Nonetheless, with this in mind I would like to re-grade the audio quality for record 2 (sides 3 and 4) as very good+ and not excellent+.

Note that the comments at the very end of the above description dated "On 27-Apr-18 at 15:04:21 BST, seller added the following information:" do not apply to this record! These apply to a previous Beatles White album that I sold earlier in the year and have mistakenly been included in the description for this record! I cannot edit them out because this current listing has already been bidded on!
