While it wasn't Gram Parsons' first melding of country and rock -- he had already recorded with The Byrds and The International Submarine Band -- or one of the two beloved albums released under his own name, the debut from The Flying Burrito Brothers may be the best display of Parsons' artistry on record.

First off, there are more original Parsons compositions here than on any of those other albums. And while he was a fine interpreter -- witness his great take on "Dark End of the Street" here -- Parsons was a genuinely excellent songwriter as well. These tracks -- and in particular the "Hot Burrito" numbers -- arguably show more range than those on either of Parsons' two solo LPs.
