Description
An original 1st mono press of Pepper on the UK Parlophone label. Matrix 1/1. The heavy set vinyl comes housed in an original mono gatefold cover with exposed flipbacks and that WIDESPINE. Note that this is the absolute earliest version of the cover that one can obtain. It was aborted very early on in the printing phase and Garrod, then, started proofing the thin-spine copies which would go onto become the standard issue for this release. Also included is the original flame 'patent applied for' inner sleeve and the dark-green cut-outs. So, 100% genuine and 100% complete. And some great audio so read on...>>
Vinyl (Ex+) In fantastic condition and has only seen very light use. Under close inspection there are a couple of very light marks per side. The surfaces really do look in superb condition and that's not something you can often say about Pepper copies. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals an EXCELLENT+ level of playback with two slight deviations. I'd love to say that every few copies of Pepper plays like this, but I can assure you that one that plays this well is something of a rarity. Certainly one of the best copies I've witnessed and the clarity in the audio is nothing short of superb. Due to it's inherent popularity this LP has nearly always seen significant use. True low-mileage carefully cared for copies are few and far between. Intros and inbetweens, on this example, are pretty much silent and the audio comes across with perfect clarity. On true low-mileage copies you can hear deep into the mix with percussion and the looping base notes perfectly resolved. All the tracks play clean and that includes those super fussy ones like WI64 and WYWY. These tracks are very hard to find playing clean due to their low-key acoustic nature. Occasionally, very occasionally, you find a little used copy and they sound fab. The tracks I could detect any background at all in was 'She's Leaving Home' - this is probably hands down the fussiest of all track on Pepper. It plays very well on this example, in fact much better than the vast majority of copies, but there's still just a few low-level crackles in a couple of spots [almost impossible to rule out entirely]. There's also a few very low-level static crackles in the intro to 'Day In The Life' - but these really are very low-level. A top level performer in all aspects you won't be finding a better copy easily..most definitely a keeper.
Cover (Ex) In very fine form and has clearly been looked after down the years. Front and back look impressive and seem to be devoid of the creasing which is often exhibited. The interior is stunning - nigh on perfect. Edge wear is very light and the openings are still sharpish. That all important wide-spine looks very smart with all text legible. There's two stress creases midway along, and a bit of light ageing. Overall the cover sits very nice and flat and retains excellent rigidity.
Cut-Outs (Ex+) They feel pretty much 'as new'. No issues at all.
Inner (Vg+) Very little ageing. Bottom edge is mostly split through - neatly.
