Rarely seen White Label Promo US 1st Pressing on Reprise Records with Gatefold Sleeve. Pressed and distributed in late 1968 ahead of the January 1969 general release date.

DescriptionThis is a very rare white label promo US pressing of The Kinks' iconic concept album, "The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society" released on the Reprise Records label. A very first pressing, featuring the rarely seen gatefold sleeve with the amazing pasted inner.
The album's delayed US release came during a difficult period for The Kinks, who were still suffering from a touring ban in America (1965-1969), significantly impacting their commercial success in the US market, adding to this the UK release date was on the same day as The Beatles 'White Album', followed by the Stones 'Beggars Banquet' a week or so later.
Subsequently this LP didn't really stand a chance on either side of the Atlantic, especially as it also had no lead single to release for it's promotion.
SleeveThis copy mimics the 1968 UK version and features a pasted inner gatefold sleeve, which was rarely seen in the US pressings. The previous owner made an attempt to remove the 'Promotional Copy - NOT FOR SALE' sticker from the front (maybe he was worried about the Feds busting him for selling contraband?) But obviously wasn't that diligent as he had also written his name on the base of the rear sleeve. Please see the photos provided.
Overall the sleeve is incredibly solid with no seam splits and the spine is intact and fully readable, just the light rubbing to the front and back, as seen with pretty much all US records from this era.
Inner SleeveBrand new anti-static sleeve (the original inner sleeve will also be included).
LabelsWhite label promotional pressings were never intended for public sale. Radio stations and industry executives received these advance copies to preview the album before its official release, making them incredibly scarce in today’s market. The fact that this copy survived with spotless labels – no spindle wear, no station markings, no writing – borders on miraculous for a promotional copy.
VinylThe Vinyl retains a great sheen and gloss (please see photos). There are a few light hairlines, but nothing feelable, just some cosmetic marks from storage or sleeve removal. A very clean LP.
Audio QualityThe audio is bright and clear, it's a very loud pressing that packs plenty of punch. There are a few tics in the silent passages between songs (05:18 and 08:00) but nothing drastic. The record plays through with no jumps, no sticking, and no significant noise during the tracks.
I have included a lo-fi recording of the entire album for you to listen to (links provided below). Please note, this recording has been made on a mobile phone and is a .mp3 file — not a direct source from the master tapes mixed at Abbey Road!!
This is only to give you an idea of the album's sound and should not be considered a representation of the actual sound quality, however any imperfections will be highlighted.
All of my records are dutifully cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S3 and will be shipped in a new anti-static inner and poly outer in a vinyl mailer. Records with picture sleeves will be separated to avoid seam splits during transit.
