Original first stereo pressing of this avant garde classical lp with a beautiful stark abstract cover designed by a young, pre-Beatles Yoko Ono; this was her first ever album artwork. The Nirvana symphony incorporates Zen Sutra and Tendai texts and was influenced by Buddhist philosophy, by the intonation and rhythm of the Sutra recitations of Buddhist priests, and by Schoenberg and Varese in their use of "tone-colour-melody" and "musical structures drawn from the energy inherent in sound itself." The performers are the NHK Symphony Orchestra, the Mixed Chorus of Tokyo Choraliers, and Nippon University Chorus Group, with conductor Wilhelm Schuchter. This album was released as part of the coveted Time/Mainstream Contemporary Sound Series which was directed by Earle Brown and showcased the postmodern avant garde in audiophile stereo (including Luigi Nono, Mauricio Kagel, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Sylvano Bussotti, Luciano Berio, etc.).

Ono is an artist and musician who was hosting concerts in her loft for her then-lover La Monte Young around the time of this lp's release; she later married Toshi Ichiyanagi and then, more famously, Beatles member John Lennon, and was associated with the Fluxus art movement along with Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, Milan Knizak, Joseph Beuys, Philip Corner, Richard Maxfield, Emmett Williams, Paul Panhuysen, Takehisa Kosugi, Juan Hidalgo, and Walter Marchetti. • Mayuzumi incorporated modern european ideas including serialism as well as 'eastern' philosophical elements such as indeterminacy into his compositions, influenced by John Cage and the 'New York School' (Christian Wolff, Morton Feldman, Earle Brown); he was a student of Ikenouchi and Ifukube, was influenced by Messiaen and Boulez, worked with Yasushi Akutagawa and Makoto Moroi, and created Japan's earliest electronic music at the NHK Tokyo studios along with Yuji Takahashi, Yori-Aki Matsudaira, Minao Shibata, Toshi Ichiyanagi, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. • This lp should be of interest to fans of the Broken Music catalog of artists record works.

Packing I pack professionally and with the utmost care drawn from years of experience trading vinyl internationally. I use new record mailers which I have determined are the best and most protective, reinforced with cardboard inserts and bubble wrap padding. All records are shipped with poly plastic sleeves and with the vinyl outside of the cover to prevent damage. All packages are completely sealed with strong packing tape covering all openings. Unless requested, no paper invoice is included in the package, both to save trees and to avoid customs difficulties. If you'd like your package done any differently, just let me know.
