This is the album that solidified Uriah Heep's reputation as a master of gothic-inflected heavy metal.
From short, sharp rock songs to lengthy, musically dense epics, Demons and Wizards finds Uriah Heep covering all the bases with style and power.
The album's approach is set with its lead-off track, "The Wizard": it starts as a simple acoustic tune but soon builds into a stately rocker that surges forth on a wall of sound built from thick guitar riffs, churchy organ, and operatic vocal harmonies.
Other highlights include "Traveller in Time," a fantasy-themed rocker built on thick wah-wah guitar riffs, and "Circle of Hands," a stately power ballad with a gospel-meets-heavy metal feel to it.
However, the top highlight of the album is the closing medley of "Paradise" and "The Spell": the first part of the medley starts in an acoustic folk mode and slowly adds layers of organ and electric guitar until it becomes a forceful slow-tempo rocker, while the second half is a punchy, organ-led rocker that includes an instrumental midsection where choral-style harmonies fortify a killer guitar solo from Mick Box.
All in all, Demons and Wizards works both as a showcase for Uriah Heep's instrumental firepower and an excellent display of their songwriting skills in a variety of hard rock styles and as a result, it is considered by many fans to be their finest hour

LABELS: Clean, bright and unmarked labels with just one or two light spindle marks - this copy has hardly been played - NEAR MINT
VINYL Visual: The vinyl surfaces have numerous light hairlines - but as this copy has, in my opinion, barely been played, I can only assume these have been caused by the inner sleeve and the record has been moved around a lot. These marks have little audio consequence - the playback is superb throughout - but visually VERY GOOD
VINYL Audio: Stunning audio to this first pressing - a beautifully recorded and engineered album which delivers crystal clear, deep, rich and impressively strong audio reproduction throughout. My one careful play-check at a loud volume revealed no audio issues of note - no scratches, no loud clicks/pops and barely any surface noise - this is a beautifully clean pressing - the run-ins and track divisions are quiet and the delicate passages play as beautifully (and quietly) as you could wish for. Critically, and conservatively graded EXCELLENT+ (if not better) for audio quality - which seem surprising as the vinyl surfaces are marked but these early pressing had deep cut grooves unaffected by surface markings and this copy actually plays much, much better than many better looking copies I have seen
SLEEVE: The original matt gatefold cover is crisp with little wear. There are some indentation marks to the front (I have tried to show these in the photos) but otherwise is a good, solid sleeve with hardly any wear to the edges or spine - all spine text is clear and bold - EXCELLENT
LYRIC INNER: The original inner has no splits (which is pretty rare) but there is some record impression and edge wear, including a crease to the top corner (please see photos) - VERY GOOD
