Label/Format: Warner Bros – First pressing on the green label with matt, smooth surfaces. This beautifully pressed by CBS with the ring ridge and bevel.

Label Conditions: Both immaculate: ultra clean, fresh and attractive with only one or two fine and faint spindle traces. This one of the best original examples I have seen for ages.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Van Morrison’s sixth post Them album and another comparable to the masterpiece Astral Weeks. The famously distinctive cover with Morrison looking a little forelorn and troubled sitting on the church steps, his trousers even have a hole. But the contents within this lovely cover must rank as amongst the finest he ever made. Again like Astral Weeks, this album is difficult to pigeon-hole, it’s a blend of rock, soul and late-night jazz, Saint Dominic’s Preview remains one of his most enigmatic releases. The opener ‘Jackie Wilson Said’, is an uptempo and vibrant beginning, his tribute to the great soul singer that was later covered very successfully by Dexy’s Midnight Runners. But the two long compositions dominate this fabulous album. 12-String acoustic guitar driven epics ‘Listen to the Lion’ (Ronnie Montrose accompanies) and the sublime ‘Almost Independence Day’, where again Morrison’s vocal improvisations are back to their stunning best. Alternatively whispering, then powerfully pleading and extolling. An album of intoxicating and hypnotic performances, its relative failure initially again was surprising. Beautifully recorded with a clear and detailed sound, ‘Van-the-Man’ could almost be in the room with you. This first issue copy does it maximum justice, a near mint record and a superb clean pressing by CBS for Warner. Any real music lover and vinyl collector will really treasure this one. The cover impressive, the elusive insert as new, that a huge pus, this is so often missing. One of the greatest songwriters ever and this one of his very best ever – the word ‘masterpiece’ is more than justified.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better, I have rarely, if ever seen a better one. A single unlaminated format with matt surfaces. Printed and made in England by Shorewood, includes the plain white inner sleeve, also the original elusive insert as seen.

Cover Front: One of the classic fronts and here looking fantastic, my overall grading hardly does this hardly aged cover full justice. A little rubbing on the bottom storage edge stops the extra (+). This front is very clean, fresh and attractive with deep vibrant colour and hardly any wear at all. Any marks or creasing little and faint – one fine half moon type surface crease below the end of the guitar – look very hard, hardly any others at all. No sticker marks or light fading, this front is practically as fine as they get.

Cover Back: Any blemishes on this back are bordering on minuscule – the lack of ring wear here, and the front is a massive plus. Any hint of rim impression little and faint, a superb back to match the beautiful front, this has always been a wear-prone cover, but this has bucked-the-trend and avoided it.

Top Edge: Straight with any rubbing light and very patchy.

Bottom Edge: A little more rubbing on this storage edge, still reasonably light, but less patchy.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, still quite sharp with any thickening only light as seen more critically end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with only a gentle hint of compression near the centre. All text is perfect and unworn as seen, the surface clean and folds unscuffed.

Corners: Any tip rubbing tiny and light, better than excellent shape retained with no bashes or dinks.

Cover Summary: A very impressive and attractive all-round example of this classic, but wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. This fantastic item should please many, if not most collectors, these are rarely seen better.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain white unlined inner with barely any creasing, two immaculate window circles and no edge splits (or repairs). The paper hardly aged, just one tiny light mark on the front side.

The Insert: MINT: a single fold gatefold insert with band details and credits, no lyrics. This is guaranteed original and has barely aged at all. Put simply: its perfect as seen.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): with little more than ultra faint, wispy surface traces seen with scrutiny under bright light. A superb visual copy that is very clean with lovely shine and solidly pressed. A top-quality pressing by CBS for Warner, this plays as lovely as it looks, it appears hardly even used on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautiful record plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Beautifully recorded with real hi-fi sound and presence, few copies will outperform this early green label original I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly carefully handled and stored. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. All elements of this classic will prove very difficult to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
