Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

SPECIAL NOTE: Rarity & Overview: Firstly, this album is not rare per se. But genuine first pressings are a different matter. There are significant differences in this very first issue compared to even slightly later second issues. The main difference lies within the cover format. Only the very first covers had the one piece, single and massively wide spine. Quite possibly the widest spine ever put on a long-playing record cover. Yes, even wider than Jethro Tull’s first pressed debut album and Zappa’s ‘Lumpy Gravy’. The artwork is the same as the reissues but this triple gatefold cover opens like a book from right to left. The far more common redesigned covers have two openings this way round plus one from a double split spine from left to right. Totally different and with different printers used too. The first issue ultra wide spine version was printed by Robor, later ones were by Gothic. The front artwork on the Robor’s are much darker with a richer deeper brown colour, this one also includes the ‘Patents applied for’ text on the back. These are far more delicate with immense pressure put upon the thin spine, finding these intact with little wear or damage is a huge task and rarely achieveable. The whole cover is very prone to all forms of wear – rubbing, ringwear, fading and general tattiness all common. Hard to find even presentable on the outer faces, this example being very nice indeed with little to fault. Both the originals and remakes included the booklet but only the originals included the ‘Yes’ logo inner sleeves. They were quickly replaced by plain white inners. These more elusive inners are included here, one however has a couple of smallish stains, the others clean and neat. A complete first issue of this wonderfully packaged triple set is quite rare, most will have the second issue version sleeve. The artwork by Roger Dean is gorgeous and has to be amongst his best ever. All six sides play beautifully with little unwanted. It appears ‘Volume 3’ has been played the most, but even the most delicate passages on ‘Close to the Edge’ plays very quietly and the whole album has little unwanted at all. Do not under-estimate how rare this is with the one piece super-wide spine Robor cover. It’s the first, and best I have seen for some considerable time.

Brief Info: Quite possibly my favourite live progressive album ever, this expansive three album set features all the Yes classics from their most popular period from ‘The Yes Album’, ‘Fragile’ and ‘Close to the Edge’. This sold well, surprisingly so as this was never a cheap album. The ‘solo’ spots are fantastic, two in particular are more than worthy of special mention. Rick Wakeman’s solo, where he plays a collage from his debut solo album ‘The Six Wives of Henry VIII’, features an air-raid as performed on the Moog and synths, it’s simply amazing. Chris Squire’s grinding bass solo is an improvised extended version on ‘Fragile’s’ ‘The Fish’ which is stunning – play this wonderful track at maximum volume. A lavish triple set with triple gatefold cover, here the genuine original Robor version with the massively wide SINGLE, unsplit spine, way, way harder to find than the far more common, standard remake. Please see my spine close-up to confirm this detail, this looks nothing like the second format version that has two separate spines that open up. All the artwork is by Roger Dean, and his futuristic landscapes rarely look better than these. This is classic era Yes, no short commercial songs they later brought into their music. Four virtuoso musicians and one of the rock’s best vocalists with wonderful complex progressive music. It hardly ever got better than this and what a pleasure to be able to offer a true first edition in such fine condition. Not perfect, few ever could be, but a lovely example nonetheless.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High++: this has all the traits to attract all forms of wear and damage. Few survive looking to nice. Apart from the design and weight, this cover is so thick it could not be stored within protective sleeve like most standard album sleeves, hence most are seen very rubbed, ringworn and faded. Many have considerable damage and this super-wide spine original was even more delicate than the later ones.

Cover Grade and Format: Excellent if not higher, a highly commendable example for such a fragile cover. This is an unlaminated, matt finished triple gatefold format. This has the massive single spine and this cover opens just like a book, all from right to left. Later ones open both sides with a double, thinner spine. Printed and made in England by Robor and this includes the ‘Patents applied for’ text. The three ‘Yes’ logo inner sleeve are included, these were soon dropped and replaced by plain white inners. The colour booklet is included too.

Cover Front: This has the original much darker brown ink colour, later ones became significantly paler. Unusual to see this unforgiving front look so clean and attractive and so devoid of wear. Any rub traces are ultra faint and the same for any creases of which there are hardly any. The odd tiny corner tip rub and crease only. Clean and classy looking with minimal traces of handling. The lack of ringwear is highly worthy of special note, few escape it.

Cover Back: Truly exceptional withi barely anything to fault, quite incredible how this has avoided ringwear, many are seen with deep penetrating full white circles. Look at my pictures, what you see is what you get.

Cover Inner Gatefold (1): The only blemishes are a few tiny pulls, most near the top edge right.

Cover Inner Gatefold (2): One of my personal favourite Dean scenes, those beautiful stags on those futuristic rocky scapes. This spread has little to fault, odd faint surface crease trace and any rub traces minor and barely registering.

Cover Inner Gatefold (3): Another absolute stunner, Barely anything to fault again with luscious rich colour that almost takes you there.

Top Edges: Just tiny tip rubs on the right and mild thickening traces to the actual back panel. Barely any real wear at all which is almost remarkable.

Bottom Edges: Virtually the same again, the lack of rubbing to the four edges is remarkable.

Right Edge(s), and Type: This side has FOUR opening edges. One for each record and a spare for the book. All clean, sharp with barely any wear and no feathering, all guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: The ultra delicate single-thickness spine is a colossal 11 millimetres or 7/16 of an inch wide and totally uncrushed or compressed. Yes, this is still as upright and erect as when made with NO forcing or repairs. As solid as when purchased with next to no wear. Any traces near the very ends, even the folds have not rubbed and all text is fully present. Again, see my pictures. I emphasise again, this is a one piece, single spine, NOT the two piece double one seen on most of these covers. Clearly this has been well looked after and few will even get close.

Corners: This amazing design as 12 separate corners, the spine four have only light tip rubs and most of the right ones have little either. Tiny and minor tip creases on a couple with minor rubs, almost the least anyone could expect n this one. Fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very fragile, and importantly original 1973 cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inners: These are quite rare and only came with the early pressing, all three have the ‘Yes’ Roger Dean logo printed on one side. All in very similar condition being around excellent. Just one has a couple or three smallish stains on one side only. That apart little else to fault. Mildly aged but with minimal creasing and all edges unsplit (and no repairs).

The Book: EX++, practically Mint(-). A 12-page fully colour book with two centre staples holding it all together. These are original, unloosened or tarnished. Each artist has 2 pages and nice to see the sound crew, producer and managers get their pictures featured on the back cover. All pages show barely any handling traces with no noteworthy creasing or marks. Clean, fresh with sharp edges, looks little handled at all.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Volume One: Near Mint, practically as made. Volume Two: EX+, two or three ultra faint surface marks, no sound. Volume Three: EX(-), some fine and whispy surface marks and light hairlines, NO sound. All three records play superbly well, any of the surface marks superficial with no effect on sound. Two very clean and little marked records, the third clearly played more but no audio impairement which is the important factor. Three original records that give a great account of themself.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: All three records play up to, and for record two and three, actually exceed their visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A quality live album recorded at different venues. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no significant pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album. The year of issue will tell you pressing quality was variable, hence the difference in weight of the three records. But these play very well indeed and even the quiet passages play with little to nothing unwanted. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. I am certain two or the three records have been played very lightly and only the third a little more. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these fine records, a wonderful live triple set with it’s lavish packaging. This set, as a genuine original, will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
