Description

Looking for something a little outside the ordinary on Lou Reed? How's about a 1st pressing with a cover design no one else will have! Most folk will be aware that the early covers were fully laminated [front and back]. But there appears to have been an initial batch where the image is quite unlike any of the later copies. A prototype design which was discontinued. Note that on nearly every copy you will see - Lou Reed's pale white face disappearing into a sea of black. This is the image they would settle on - and is iconic. But the initial image had his head disappearing into a gold/brown cloud... It kinda looks weird! So, can quite imagine why they opted for a different look. The vinyl is a standard heavy pressed shiny orange 1972 1st press. Matrix 1E/1E - very 1st cut. Also included is an original 1972 poly-lined inner sleeve.
Vinyl (Vg+/Vg) In very nice condition despite having seen light to moderate use. Under close inspection expect a few light marks, and a couple of very light trails - nothing heavy or nasty looking. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly VERYGOOD+ level of playback with a couple of deviations. Intros and inbetweens are mostly nice and quiet and the audio comes across with great clarity. These 1st pressing sounds great when on song - lovely warmth and ambience. The only issues I found were in 'Wild Side' - a few sporadic light ticks [pretty minor and innocuous]. And 'Perfect Day' - which is very low-key... exhibits a bit of background and a few ticks. Again, not bad ...but audible all the same. 'Make Up' - exhibits a bit of background - but plays acceptable. Other than that expect a beautiful rendition of this 70's classic LP.
Cover (Vg+) In lovely condition particularly given that it's this very early and collectable variant. Both front and back are lovely and shiny and flat. A small amount of laminate lift over on the spine edge [front and back] - pretty much obligatory. A couple of tiny thumbnail creases on the front. Edge wear is light except for on the spine. There's a patch of wear [approx. 1 inch] where it has worn through. I have tape repaired it and it is now only a relatively minor cosmetic issue. All text on the spine remains fully legible. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity.
Inner (Vg+) Light ageing. A couple of splits have been taped up.
