Description

Original 1968 US pressing of Mad River's self-titled debut album on Capitol ST-2985, this is the generally preferred version pressed at the Los Angeles plant. Although the band didn't exist for long, this west coast (Berkeley, California) group put out one of the most memorable pieces of rock music, totally in the style of other masterpieces on the label but notably a bit earlier, in this debut LP. One can hear some of the earliest prog moves on the monstrous "War Goes On," a 12-and-a-half-minute track about a hitchiker and a truck driver, which sound at moments like an acid trip gone south... If you like psych or prog music, this one is essential! This cover has some minor flaws as most do, there is some light ringwear on the delicate black front image while the back is mostly intact, and a promo "FREE" punch in one corner, but the edges and spine are beautifully intact, I'll give it a VG to be conservative. The disc has many light marks on both sides which can be seen under a strong light but only plays with light background noise mostly between tracks and in the quieter moments on my system, I'll also put this at a conservative VG. If you've only heard the reissues of this you're missing out, because they're all mostly vinyl-sourced and at the wrong speed! The original pressings are the best way to hear this classic acid monster.
