Description

An original 1st mono press of Pepper on the UK Parlophone label. Matrix 1/1. The heavy-set vinyl comes housed in an original mono gatefold cover with exposed flipback. Importantly, and interestingly, this is a genuine FOUTH PROOF specimen. After abandoning the wide-spine version Garrod and Lofthouse re-designed and created new covers for proofing - these are the much sought after "4th proof" copies. You can identify them quite straight forwardly by the mention of 'Fourth Proof' on the flipbacks along with with a special code in the centre. These, are effectively the 1st copies of the final design that would go into full production. We do not have an original inner sleeve or cut-outs. So, the listing if for the record and the cover ONLY.
Vinyl (Vg/Vg+) Remains in very nice condition despite a moderate level of use. Do expect a good few light marks either side, but nothing that's heavy or going to cause significant issue. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly VERYGOOD+ level of playback with one deviation. By and large a decent player which, yet again, shows how these early copies are quite capable of kicking out decent audio despite having seen a fair bit of use. Do expect a bit of static in a few spots per side, and the occasional errant tick. Nothing invasive or persistent. The only deviation is a few clicks in the first section of WI64. A very enjoyable and entertaining listen from this historically important record. It's clearly not going to make the top-grades, but should more than suffice for a collector who understands the historical aspect and wants a decent player.
Cover (Vg+) A very decent looking 4th proof example. The front is clean and flat and doesn't appear to have been abused. All I can make out are a few thumbnail crease toward the opening. The rear is equally good with a couple of thumbnail creases - nothing worse. The interior looks superb with those flibacks intact and in extremely good order. The one let down is perhaps the spine. Don't expect to be able to make out all the text. It's showing a bit of wear - hasn't warn-through though. Overall the cover retains very good rigidity.
