The Beatles Yesterday& Today Mono Second State (Paste-Over) Butcher Cover LP

Here is a “PASTE-OVER” BUTCHER COVER for someone who may want one.

Here are the details:

• “YESTERDAY AND TODAY” LP by THE BEATLES

• This LP is Capitol Records T 2553.

• This LP was issued June 20, 1966.

• This LP is a MONO (Monaural) LP which is designated by the letter “T” that precedes the catalog number on both the cover and the labels.

• As you most likely know, the original cover issued for Capitol’s “Yesterday And Today” LP (known as the “Butcher Cover”) featured the Beatles wearing butcher smocks with slabs of red meat and decapitated baby dolls. Outcry from the public about it caused Capitol Records to stop production of that cover and recall the LPs already shipped with that cover. To save money, Capitol then pasted “Trunk” cover slicks over copies of the LPs with “Butcher” cover slicks and sent them out to record retailers. An LP with a “Trunk” slick pasted over the “Butcher” slick is referred to as a “SECOND STATE” or “PASTE-OVER” BUTCHER COVER. That is the LP in this auction.

• YOU CAN BE ASSURED THAT THERE IS A “BUTCHER” SLICK UNDER THE “TRUNK” SLICK for two reasons:

  1) You can see the faint image of Ringo’s black turtleneck shirt under his white butcher smock (appearing as an inverted triangle) showing through the white trunk slick. (Please check the images.) When you look at the point of the arrow, you will see a small white space and on the other side of that white space is a slanted dark area which is Ringo’s black shirt. (I included pics with flash and one without flash to help see it.)

  2) On the left side margin of the “Trunk” slick, you will see a line of gray which is the left edge of the Butcher slick underneath. When the “Trunk” slick was pasted on, it was not lined up exactly with the edge of the “Butcher” slick underneath. As a result the gray edge of the “Butcher” slick runs down about 2/3 of the edge from top to bottom next to the spine. (I’ve seen a lot of “Butcher” covers, but I’ve only seen very few where the edges of the “Butcher” slick were left uncovered by the pasted- over “Trunk” slicks.)

• The COVER is in VG CONDITION with moderate overall wear and aging to both the front and rear slicks. You will see moderate wear on the images on the front slick. There is slight wear on George’s hair at the top and the lower part of the trunk at the bottom. There are some light age-stains and spotting on the white cover, both front and rear. A name is written in red ballpoint on the front cover under the LP title and at the lower right corner of the rear cover by blue fountain pen. The top seam and the spine are nice and strong. There is a 2 ½ -inch split on the bottom seam at the opening. This VG front slick doesn’t look too bad at all!

• The VINYL is in VG to VG- CONDITION with numerous light surface scratches/hairlines/scuffs (but none are “feel-able”). The vinyl is very glossy. There are a couple of very small scuffs on the Side 2 label (see images). The same name that is written on the cover is written lightly in ballpoint on the Side 1 colorband.

• The REAR COVER has the number “3” printed at the bottom right corner which indicates that the cover originated from Capitol Records’ Scranton Pressing Plant.

• The VINYL was produced at Capitol Records’ Scranton Pressing Plant. This is indicated by the triangle “?” containing the letters “IAM” in the trail-off wax. This is the symbol Capitol Records used to identify vinyl pressed at its Scranton Pressing Plant.

• Therefore, this Scranton cover and Scranton vinyl are correctly paired/matched.

• NOTE: Some sellers may intentionally or accidentally switch vinyl and covers in order to create an LP with a higher grade cover and vinyl combination, but NOT correctly matched to the same pressing plant. I don’t do that. This is the correct cover and vinyl for this pressing/issue.

• This LP also comes with its ORIGINAL ORANGE CAPITOL INNER SLEEVE that was issued with the MONO pressings of this Beatles’ title.

Maybe this SECOND STATE BUTCHER COVER SHOWING THE EDGE OF THE “BUTCHER” SLICK BENEATH THE PASTED OVER “TRUNK” SLICK is the one that you want to add to your vinyl collection!!!
